The most important factors in college success

Experts say students don't get the same learning experience in online courses.

How does someone succeed in college? It’s the $64,000 question—or, these days, more like the $150,000 question—whose answer has been sought by countless policy makers, researchers, and universities over the years.

In a new attempt to provide insight into the discussion, sociologists Dan Chambliss of Hamilton College and Christopher Takacs of the University of Chicago took the long road to an answer.

Hamilton College puts QR code on admissions poster

There is a shortage of new ideas in college recruiting, and each one has a brief shelf life, reports the Washington Post. New program to aid community colleges unprepared for math

Too many students arrive at Texas community and technical colleges — about 38 percent in 2010–ill-prepared for math after high school, say higher education experts, the Star-Telegram reports. But a new Texas program, supported by a $1 million grant, aims to improve that percentage. Instead of taking a noncredit remedial math class before the college-level course, students at Tarrant County College and 10 other Texas community college systems will use a model that lets them get full credit while getting the needed tutoring and support, said Raymund Paredes, commissioner of higher education for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board…
