The pervasiveness of MOOC skepticism shouldn’t surprise anyone in higher education, Little said, as the experimental web-based courses are just the latest development in a nearly nonstop attack on the teaching profession.
Little said faculty members on campuses nationwide have taken a “defensive crouch” in recent decades as cost-cutting administrators and hostile state and federal lawmakers have taken direct aim at professors, especially the tenured variety.
“MOOCs obscure the real work of teaching in ways that undermine us all,” she said. “MOOCs feed the lie that reduces teaching to lecturing” and that “we care nothing of our audience or their comprehension or confusion.”
