Students: Online courses require more discipline

Three-quarters of employers said online courses require the same or more discipline as traditional classes.

Measuring students’ perception of the challenges inherent in online education would be a critical step in improving nontraditional education, the report’s authors said.

“As key decision makers face this changing landscape, this research provides important insights from some of those on the ground, in order to ensure that online education can better meet the needs of students and society,” they wrote.

The four in 10 students who said they didn’t learn as much in an online setting isn’t the first piece of recent bad news for campus technologists.

A Noel-Levitz survey released in September charged that “instructional quality” remains the foremost concern among those enrolled in web-based classes.

“Creating connections with students is the great challenge of online education,” said Julie Bryant, associate vice president at Noel-Levitz and author of the report. “How do you keep student interest and involvement when their ‘classroom’ is a computer screen? That’s precisely why so many online programs survey their students about their satisfaction levels.”
