Ranking: 2017-2018’s best Masters in Data Science degree programs


Online Course Report releases 2017-2018 ranking of Masters in Data Science degree programs.

Online Course Report, an authority in open, corporate, and traditional online education rankings and resources, has released their 2017-2018 ranking of masters in data science degree programs here.

In compiling the ranking of online master’s in data science degrees, Online Course Report’s analysts surveyed close to 100 programs worldwide. Surveyed programs were judged based on the following criteria:

  • Affordability (1/3): an institution’s cost per credit hour for out-of-state residents provided by the degree program or institutional website.
  • Flexibility (1/3): the number of options—including acceptance of prior college credits, self-paced learning initiatives, accelerated courses, and number of specializations—that allow students to complete a program at a pace of their choosing.
  • Student Support Services (1/3): an institution’s rank for providing student support service such as digital library assistance, virtual office hours, and access to career services.

The three top ranking online programs surveyed include Dakota State University (1st) followed by Southern New Hampshire University and Regis University.

Notable trends in the report show a growth in online data science programs at both traditionally prestigious research universities as well as universities with large online offerings and non-traditional delivery options with greater flexibility. This growth is in line with trade-specific higher education online growth as a whole.

For data science in particular, favorable press on career prospects as well as massive demand could have played a large role in the rapid proliferation of online data science degree programs.
