Mozilla’s Open Badges project employs a similar digital badging system that can be shared through social media, though one that is less standardized as educators can create their own badges using their own criteria.
“They know their communities best,” Mozilla explains on its Wiki.
The issue of demonstrating nontraditional academic accomplishments is by no means a new one created during the advent of the internet and high-speed web connections, wrote Jonathan Haber, a Coursera student who writes about MOOC-related issues on the blog Degree of Freedom.
For years, he wrote, “students have sought to transfer credits from diverse learning experiences into their institutional degree program.”
