FAIRFAX, Va., April 10, 2012 – Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Va., won the top award and received $10,000 for student scholarships in the annual Performance Award competition held in conjunction with the Summit user conference. ODU was selected for its successful revitalization initiative that is unifying more than 200 administrative and business processes and yielding savings in both costs and staff time.
“In today’s tough fiscal environment, universities must, as a matter of survival, focus their efforts on administrative cost containment, greater accountability, improved customer service and expanded non-traditional services to generate increased revenues,” said Robert Fenning, Vice President for Administration and Finance at Old Dominion University. “We entrusted this tall order to the Ellucian Business Process Management consultants who, working with ODU system owners, created a roadmap to refine processes, incorporate best practices and implement new functionalities and enhancements to become a more agile, service-oriented and fiscally accountable institution.”
In just one year ODU has undergone a complete transformation and, according to the University:
• Saved 25 hours of staff time each month by eliminating manual finance reports,
• Saved 4 hours each day by automating check processing,
• Improved accounts payable timeframes by 9%,
• Saved over $10,000 in mailing costs with electronic W-2 sign-ups, and
• Saved $30,000 in postage using e-refunds.
“The business and processes improvements have been truly transformative,” said Fenning. “However, more importantly, this initiative has inspired unprecedented cultural change across our university.”
For the first time in the history of the Performance Award program, two additional awards were also presented. Cuyahoga Community College and Northwestern College (MN) earned Special Honoree Awards. Each award was accompanied by $5,000 for student scholarships.
Special Honoree Cuyahoga Community College transformed its administrative and business processes with a revitalization program it named ‘BannerizeIt!’. Using a blueprint created by Ellucian’s Strategic Consulting Group, the College broke down both process and technology silos to offer more and faster services to students and automated many administrative processes. One significant project result, the time to manually input and process 3,000 adjunct faculty records was automated and reduced from two weeks to only eight minutes.
Special Honoree Northwestern College (MN) created a probability ratings model in Banner Relationship Management to meet a goal of increasing enrollment by six percent. Using the probability model, the college was able to identify the most likely candidates and foster relationships and focus its resources on these recruits. As of February 1, 2012, Northwestern College (MN) reported it increased applicants by 29 percent and increased admits by 20 percent.
“The Performance Award provides us with the opportunity to celebrate our customers’ ingenuity and creativity to further performance improvements and student success at their institutions,” said John F. Speer, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ellucian. “Each of this year’s nominees is evidence of the talented, brilliant and inspiring individuals that work every day to continually improve performance and promote individual achievement at their institutions. We feel privileged to support these institutions in these accomplishments and their continuing endeavors.”
