Greenwich, CT – Campus Televideo (www.campustelevideo.com), a leading provider of custom cable TV, ResNet data and other telecommunications services to over 230 colleges and universities nationwide, has released the results of its 2012 Bandwidth and ResNet Services survey. The report discusses bandwidth and technology-related issues, trends and challenges as shared by higher education IT professionals at public and private institutions around the country.
This year’s key findings included:
• Many IT managers will be challenged to meet growing demand for bandwidth and data services, as the number of public schools reporting decreasing IT budgets jumped 17% points this year from 20% in 2011 to 37% in 2012. Alternatively, 35% of private schools experienced an increase in budget from last fiscal year.
• Keeping up with bandwidth demand continues to be a challenge with over 65% of schools adding bandwidth last year and nearly half experiencing saturation. However, a lower rate of expected growth indicates that schools anticipate meeting demand in the near future.
• More schools are turning to bandwidth subscription upgrades to offset growing usage as a result of entertainment video and gaming. This year, adoption grew more than 50% (primarily at private institutions), with 13.2% of schools having already implemented and more planning to implement next year.
• Wired networks may be taking the same path as wired telephony with approximately 50% of schools reporting an average 20% decrease in wired usage in favor of wireless networks. 80% of respondents reported a significant increase in wireless usage.
• Peripherals ranked second behind external video as a driver of bandwidth demand, with schools reporting an average of 2-3 peripherals per student. On average, schools attributed about 40% of bandwidth growth to the use of wireless devices.
“Despite technology developments, continuing economic concerns and changes in how campuses utilize ResNet services, we’re hearing many of the same sentiments as last year from public and private schools — wireless is still a top priority, external video is continuing to hog bandwidth and schools are reporting bandwidth saturation,” said Brian Benz, CEO of Campus Televideo. “This year’s finding that struck me was wireless coverage nearly reaching 100% at many schools, clearly meeting a demand as the number of smartphones and tablet devices on campuses continue to increase.”
This survey, now in its fourth iteration, was conducted online in January and February of 2012. Responses were collected from 207 higher education IT professionals across the country (61% private, 39% public). The company’s data services group led the research, in conjunction with Dynamic Marketing Solutions, a higher education marketing firm.
