The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) announced the 100 STEM faculty leaders from 76 institutions of higher education who have been selected to participate in the 2015 PKAL Summer Leadership Institutes.

This marks the seventeenth year that PKAL has sponsored summer institutes. The institutes will be held July 14-19 and July 21-26 at The Claggett Center in Adamstown, Maryland, and July 25-30 at The Baca Campus of Colorado College in Crestone, Colorado.

PKAL’s five-day intensive institutes are designed for early- or mid-career STEM faculty engaged in projects designed to transform undergraduate STEM education including changes at the classroom, departmental, and institutional levels.

At the institutes, STEM faculty are exposed to the theory and practice required to act as agents of change in their home institutions or professional societies.

Through plenary seminars, experiential leadership exercises, group discussions, and personal reflection time, participants

  • engage in discussions about national, regional, and local challenges and opportunities facing faculty engaged in developing stronger STEM teaching and learning practices;
  • learn from experienced mentors about the politics of institutional change, the importance of understanding institutional culture, and the changing national context for STEM leadership;
  • practice the art of successful communication and negotiation;
  • learn about communication styles and develop an appreciation of how differences in communication styles, experience, and backgrounds enhances effective dialogue and institutional change projects;
  • reflect privately and with mentors and peers on being an agent-of-change and a leader in STEM education;
  • create a leadership growth plan, with guidance from mentors, that outlines the vision, goals, and strategies that will serve as an action agenda to effect change;
  • join a network of colleagues from around the country who share similar goals regarding the creation of effective learning environments for all STEM learners.
