Pitt harnesses Internet2 for campus services model

University of Pittsburgh updates access to campus services with Internet2 NET+ OneCampus platform.

Pitt-campusThe University of Pittsburgh has partnered with rSmart and Internet2 to provide students, faculty, and staff a more intuitive way to find and access campus services and information from any device.

As a major public research university with more than 32,000 students, the Pitt community will use the Internet2 NET+ OneCampus platform to quickly connect with hundreds of applications such as registration, grades, and email in an online marketplace format.

OneCampus takes a new approach to organizing web-based campus services with a Google-like search, ratings, and reviews to effectively identify what services are being used and satisfaction levels. In addition, Pitt’s integration of OneCampus with Internet2’s InCommon federated identity management system enables single sign-on authentication and one-click access to secure services.

Pitt was first introduced to OneCampus as a member of the Internet2 NET+ service validation process. They joined technology leaders from Indiana University, University of Utah, University of Maryland, Clemson University, University of Nebraska-Omaha, and BYU-Idaho to collaboratively guide and shape the Internet2 NET+ OneCampus offering for higher education institutions.

“After completing the Internet2 NET+ service validation process, we recognized that OneCampus provided Pitt with a powerful alternative to our traditional legacy portal that will better serve our user needs going forward,” said Dan Menicucci, Enterprise Architect at the University of Pittsburgh. “During the early adoption phase, we plan to run OneCampus in parallel with our current portal to ensure a smooth transition and we will begin to retire our legacy software later this year.”

Focused on providing secure, agile and reliable user mobility in the cloud to higher education’s diverse users, Internet2 NET+ is a research and education (R&E) community-driven initiative. Through a rigorous peer-driven evaluation process, R&E institutions and cloud service providers work together to develop offerings that maximize deployment efficiencies and minimize the business and legal challenges, financial costs, and technology risks of migrating from on-campus to cloud-based solutions.

Representatives from institutions involved in the Internet2 NET+ service validation process, along with the University of Delaware and Purdue University, serve as OneCampus advisory board members to provide input on market trends and the product roadmap to Internet2 and rSmart. This will ensure the solution meets the needs of higher education institutions today and into the future.

rSmart CEO Tony Potts added, “Pitt demonstrated during the service validation process that they are a very innovative and forward-thinking university and provided our team excellent feedback and suggestions. We look forward to working closely with Pitt’s IT team on best practices and enhancements to OneCampus in the future.”

rSmart’s OneCampus offering is available to all higher education institutions and Internet2 members as part of Internet2’s NET+ initiative. To request a demo or to view recent OneCampus webinars, visit http://www.rsmart.com.
