New online courses include statistics, understanding wireless, and sports math
The massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a hot development in higher education. Many colleges, including Indiana and Purdue universities, have started offering them in the past few years.
The first of Notre Dame’s MOOCs, titled I “Heart” Stats,” an introductory course to statistics, will start April 15. Other upcoming offerings: Understanding Wireless, starting May 18; Jesus in Scripture and Tradition, June 1; and Math in Sports, June 15.
Each course lasts about eight weeks. Anyone of any age or educational background is welcome to enroll.
There’s no limit on the number of people who can enroll for a MOOC.
“If we could hit 50,000 students (per course), that would be great,” said Sonia Howell, a Notre Dame post-doctoral fellow and the project manager.
