Ashland University Wins AV Technology and InfoComm Awards for Inventive Use of Mediasite by Sonic Foundry

University uses Mediasite for Medical Simulation

MADISON, Wis. — July 9, 2013 — Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the trusted leader for video content management and webcasting solutions, today announced that its customer Ashland University won a 2013 AV Technology End-User Award and an InfoComm People’s Choice Award for its creative use of Mediasite in its nursing simulation center and classrooms.

AV Technology End-User Awards through AV Technology Magazine recognizes innovations that benefit end-users, technology managers and facility directors. Ashland University’s Simulation Center at Dwight Schar College of Nursing & Health Sciences won the award for ‘Most Future-Forward Use of AV in a Command & Control System’ for its inventive use of Mediasite. Sonic Foundry’s Mediasite Enterprise Video Platform also received an award for ’Best New Rich Media Data Management System.’ Winners were announced at the NewBay Media Awards Ceremony recently at InfoComm 2013 in Orlando, Fla.

Ashland University’s project also won an InfoComm People’s Choice Award in the healthcare category. A panel of technical managers, journalists and educators selected Ashland University as a finalist, and attendees of InfoComm 2013 June 12-14 in Orlando, Fla. selected winners.

The Dwight Schar College of Nursing & Health Sciences building in Mansfield, Ohio is home to an automated and streamlined educational technology program, providing students with an experiential environment that improves learning outcomes. To teach basic nursing care and prioritization of patient care, students practice in seven simulation labs, four exam rooms, and a home healthcare lab. Mediasite Recorders are linked to the master control room and assist in recording and managing online instruction. Nursing and healthcare students watch and review instruction in debriefing rooms or in an online environment after the simulation takes place.

“Mediasite was one of the components used in online instruction integrated with simulated patients. Simulators, which are robotic patients, are programmed to give life-like responses to medical conditions,” said Tom Kemp, director of instructional technology and learning management at Ashland University. “Mediasite allows our nursing program to thrive.”

Ashland University plans to roll out My Mediasite to select faculty this fall with full implementation planned for the spring. The deployment will empower faculty and students to create upload, edit, publish, share and manage academic video.

Kemp will present a free webinar “Medical Simulation with Video: Ashland University’s Streamlined Approach to Online Health Education” at 11 a.m. CT July 16. Register at www.sonicfoundry.com/AshlandWebinar.

“Ashland has created a premier environment for students to use technology integration to master the skills they’ll need to succeed as they prepare to work in a competitive healthcare system,” said Gary Weis, chief executive officer of Sonic Foundry. “We look forward to partnering with Ashland as it advances its current simulation environment even further, together working toward a shared vision of streamlined, advanced multi-view capture initiatives.”
