Marketplace trend update: 5 ed-tech developments

Below, we’ve gathered some of the latest and most relevant marketplace news to keep you up-to-date on product developments, teaching and learning initiatives, and new trends in education.

Absolute [1] introduced functionality that detects data at risk on endpoints associated with cloud storage applications. This new capability allows organizations to remotely secure data stored in the cloud and beyond the corporate network. Cloud storage applications are often used by employees to store and share corporate data with other employees. Considered ‘Shadow IT’ by many organizations, this behavior can contravene internal data security policies since the data is hosted outside the corporate network and beyond the reach of IT, making it impossible to monitor and maintain visibility over sensitive information. Kira Talent [3] closed its $5 million Series A financing round. The company will use the funds to provide greater value for clients and develop technology focused on supporting the entire student journey from the admissions process through to job placement. Read more [4].

The National Endowment for the Humanities [5] announced $79 million in grants for 290 humanities projects and programs across the United States. The grants will be awarded in 14 humanities fields or areas and also include $42.8 million in annual operating support for the national network of state and local humanities councils. Barnes & Noble Education, Inc. [7] will extend its current relationship with OpenStax [8], a Rice University-based nonprofit that makes college more accessible for students. Barnes & Noble Education will leverage OpenStax content through its learning analytics platform, LoudCloud, making the content not only cost-efficient, but also measurable. Read more [9].

An assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University received a SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grant [10] for her research, “Lab-in-a-Cube Hands-on Lab Learning with an Automatic Feedback.” IITG funds campus innovations and initiatives in instructional technology that have the strongest potential to be replicated across all SUNY campuses. Lab-in-a-Cube explores virtual access to labs with hardware that acts as a remote control to allow students realistic, hands-on experiences, which includes elements of “gamification” to engage learners with direct feedback on their performance.
