Gaming

Triseum’s game based learning development practices and rigorous design methods are creating a measurable impact on student outcomes. Newly released results from Triseum’s Fall 2016 research study aimed at measuring the learning efficacy of its ARTé: Mecenas™ game indicate that, after approximately two hours of game play, art history students who participated in the experimental group had a knowledge gain of 24.7 percent from pre-test to post-test. College Access and Opportunity

In a new report from the American Talent Initiative (ATI), The University of Texas at Austin is one of five colleges and universities highlighted for its success expanding opportunity and boosting graduation rates for low- and moderate-income students. The report, “Funding Socioeconomic Diversity at High Performing Colleges and Universities,” analyzes strategies that have allowed the five institutions to increase student opportunities despite budgetary constraints. The other four institutions are the University of California at Berkeley, University of Richmond, Vassar College and Franklin & Marshall College. Read more.

More than 300 people were on hand at Palomar College to celebrate the launch of the Palomar Promise campaign, benefiting local high school students who plan to attend Palomar College. The Palomar Promise is designed to increase the college-going rate of local high school graduates by providing FREE community college access to all eligible North San Diego County 2017 high school graduates starting in Fall 2017. Aspiring law school students will soon have access to free online practice materials for the LSAT from Khan Academy and the Law School Admission Council, the maker of the test. The organizations announced a new partnership to make personalized LSAT practice widely available to all, absolutely free. Read more.

The National Student Clearinghouse® Research Center released six‐year, student success outcomes and college completion rates by state, which covers more than 2.9 million students. The new report, Completing College: A State Level View of Student Attainment Rates, shows each state’s outcomes for students who started postsecondary education in fall 2010 at four‐year, public institutions; two‐year, public institutions; and four‐year private nonprofit institutions. This fall, students in Florida’s Nassau and Duval counties will benefit from a free community college program for all eligible high school graduates in their community. Under this new College Promise program, Florida State College at Jacksonville will cover tuition, fees, and books for students who have graduated high school within the past three years. Read more.

Learning Outcomes and Success

Chalk & Wire, a higher education assessment provider, announced new features to its platform that will help institutions better assess a general education program, and a variety of other programs, by measuring student learning outcomes. Eliminating double assessment, Chalk & Wire now allows the inclusion of outcomes-only criteria into task-based rubrics. This permits grades and learning outcomes to be addressed in the same instrument at the same time. Read more.

Arizona State University Online has launched a Success Center to provide support for online students in achieving their goals. From helping adjust to life as an online student, to offering success strategies and time management tips, to connecting students to the various resources at ASU, success coaches are available to help smooth any bumps in the road and to cheer students on as they cross the finish line. InsideTrack, a provider of student success coaching services, announced the launch of a new service called Strong Start Coaching, which supports admitted students in making informed college selection and enrollment decisions, and developing the habits they will need to persist and graduate. InsideTrack’s professional coaches engage students upon admission to help them define their educational goals, select the best fit program, connect to campus resources and develop a plan for completing their studies. Network and Infrastructure

Siemens has begun addressing significant infrastructure improvement needs at Tallahassee Community College (TCC). Through a performance contract with Siemens, TCC will use new building technologies and make capital improvements that are designed to reduce energy use and operational costs. The total projected savings over the 15-year life of the contract include more than $8.6 million in energy savings and nearly $750,000 in operational costs. Read more.

Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston is using Comcast‘s high-performance Ethernet services to make online learning a reality; help improve campus-wide communications; and strengthen network access, mobile device management and security. TSU is home to approximately 1,400 faculty and staff, and 9,000 students. The historic institution offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, along with 80-plus student organizations. Montgomery College in Maryland has selected the Atlantech Online Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) solution, powered by BroadSoft, for its digital transformation to a modern “connected campus” environment. The UCaaS solution provides administrators, faculty and students with a next generation telecommunications infrastructure that enhances learning and school operations. Read more.

With the help of rSmart, Northern Kentucky University (NKU) will be able to provide students, faculty, and staff a more modern and intuitive way to find and access campus services and information. OneCampus, the cloud-based portal developed by rSmart, will allow the NKU community to easily connect to dozens of programs such as student services, academic support, NKU’s learning management system, and even transportation services, all in an online marketplace format. Online Learning

edX, the online education platform from Harvard and MIT, launched of 16 new MicroMasters programs from top universities across the globe. edX created MicroMasters programs to bridge the knowledge gap between higher education and the workplace. Through 12 prestigious university partners, edX is expanding these programs across in-demand fields like business analytics, digital product management, cybersecurity and data science. Read more.

Gale, a Cengage company, has launched a new archive on women’s studies that explores the many contributions of women throughout history. Part of the growing Gale Primary Sources program, the Women’s Studies Archive represents Gale’s focus on publishing material that supports diversity studies and provides historical context around current topics. Rankings

College Choice, a leading authority in college and university rankings and resources, has published its 2017 ranking for the Best MBA Programs. Both a terminal degree and a professional degree, the MBA challenges students in a variety of business-related areas, such as marketing, finance, human resources, operations, and accounting. STEM

Coding Dojo, a coding bootcamp provider, and Seattle Central College, one of the three colleges that make up the Seattle Colleges District, announced a program to deliver courses covering in-demand programming languages and technologies. These classes will be hosted by the Continuing Education department at Seattle Central College, and Coding Dojo will provide the curriculum, instructors and access to its online platform. Read more.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) have signed a three-year agreement designed to support the two organizations’ mutual goals with regard to increasing diversity in engineering. The agreement outlines collaboration in a number of areas to achieve NSBE’s main strategic goal, which is to lead the U.S. to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually, with bachelor’s degrees, by the year 2025, up from 3,501 in 2014.
