The Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) to Host SXSWedu Workshop

March 5, 2014, hands-on workshop will teach attendees how education metadata can help optimize learning

Philadelphia, PA, January 16, 2014 – As part of this year’s SXSWedu conference, the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) will examine the uses and benefits of the LRMI education metadata specification in a workshop entitled, “LRMI: Using Education Metadata to Support Learning.” The event will take place Wednesday, March 5, 2014, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (CST) in Austin, TX. The annual SXSWedu conference features compelling sessions and workshops to drive meaningful conversation and collaboration around promising practices to improve teaching and learning.

The LRMI workshop is specifically aimed at learning resource creators, tagging services providers, and educators at all levels interested in content that is optimized for personal learning. During the session, attendees will:

• Learn how the LRMI metadata standard can make it easier for educators and students to find instructional materials to meet specific learning needs.
• See how tagging works with real learning resources and participate in hands-on tagging activities.
• Network with like-minded educators and industry professionals.

Speakers leading the LRMI discussion include: Michael Jay, president of Educational Systemics; Trilby Berger, senior vice president for strategic partnerships of MetaMetrics, Inc.; and Sue Buesing, vice president of McHugh & Associates.

Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and co-led by the Association of Educational Publishers and Creative Commons, the LRMI developed a common metadata framework for describing educational content and products on the web so educators, students, and parents can more efficiently search for quality resources. In April 2013, Schema.org, the consortium of search engines Microsoft Bing, Google, Yahoo!, and Yandex that is working to establish common metadata tagging across the Internet, adopted the LRMI schema. This means that the LRMI properties can now be indexed as part of the structured metadata that major search engines crawl in their searches.

“SXSWedu is the perfect stage for our LRMI workshop, as it draws individuals who can take advantage of the LRMI’s potential impact on the education community,” said Dave Gladney, LRMI project manager at the Association of American Publishers PreK-12 Learning Group and organizer of the workshop. “Our LRMI experts and hands-on tagging opportunities will help anyone trying to index and organize learning resources to better support individualized learning.”

To attend the LRMI workshop, you must be registered for SXSWedu. Register for the conference here. Once registered, you can add the LRMI workshop to your schedule here.

If you’re attending SXSWedu but can’t make the workshop, Gladney and Jay will be available for individual meetings throughout the event. Please contact Lauren Burke (lburke@kehcomm.com) for more details.
