Free Education Metadata Workshop Scheduled on June 5

Event will help educational content providers understand best practices for implementing new Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) specification for increased discoverability

WILMINGTON, DE, May 16, 2013 – On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) will host a free LRMI Workshop following its annual Content in Context (CIC) conference in Washington, D.C. The workshop will provide background information and updates on the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI), a project co-led by AEP and Creative Commons to create an education-specific extension of the Schema.org web markup standard. Like Schema.org’s goal to improve the general search experience, the LRMI aims to make it easier for educators, students, and others to find precisely the right instructional materials at the right time. The workshop is free and open to both CIC attendees and the general public.

Session topics will include:

• Publisher perspectives on LRMI and experiences with implementation
• An overview of other important and emerging education data initiatives
• Best practices for aligning content to Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as other education frameworks
• Metadata projects that build on the LRMI, including accessibility metadata
• Processes and plans for evolving the LRMI properties

The day will conclude with a hands-on tagging activity that will walk attendees through the LRMI tagging process. For starters, attendees will learn what properties to use and what values to assign, what constitutes an individual resource, and how best to determine the proper person from their organization to do the tagging. Attendees are encouraged to bring resources or links to resources that they would like to tag.

“This workshop kicks off our year-long LRMI workshop series designed to update everyone on the LRMI project and take the next step toward implementation,” said Dave Gladney, LRMI project manager at AEP. “Individuals and teams in attendance will gain valuable insights and skills that can be applied or transferred immediately within their organizations.”
