Adapt Courseware Awards Gwinnett Technical College with Adaptive Learning Research Grant

GTC to Measure Detailed Learning Outcomes with Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Sociology during Summer Term

Rochester, NY and Lawrenceville, GA – June 26, 2013 – Adapt Courseware, the provider of comprehensive adaptive online curriculum resources that individualize each student’s learning experience, has awarded Gwinnett Technical College (GTC), one of Georgia’s largest technical colleges, with a $20,000 research grant to implement multiple adaptive learning sections of Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Sociology. As part of the grant, GTC will compare learning outcomes in course sections using adaptive learning content with course sections that use traditional online content which does not adapt.

“We have strong success with our current online courses, but are always concerned about students who don’t complete. We believe the addition of adaptive courseware will improve success rates by individualizing activities for our most at-risk students, while also enhancing the learning experience for the rest of our students,” said Dr. Victoria Seals, vice president of academic affairs, Gwinnett Tech. “The adaptive learning research grant offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with Adapt Courseware and advance the way students engage with curriculum, instructors, and each other. We hope to see increased student motivation, learning, satisfaction, and course retention.”

GTC will evaluate learning outcomes in the adaptive learning and control sections for several hundred students enrolled in Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Sociology during the 2013 summer term. Additionally, the outcomes research study will continue in the fall term with a newly enrolled, larger student population.

Both the adaptive learning sections and control sections for each discipline will be fully online and will run concurrently with their counterparts. Students in both the adaptive learning and control sections of PSCY 1101 Introductory Psychology will receive the same final exams as each other, and students across all sections of SOCI 1101 Introduction to Sociology will also complete the same final exams as their peers, providing well-defined sample populations that will allow comparable assessments within each subject.

Adapt Courseware currently has several additional outcomes studies underway with colleges and universities nationwide, in which indicators point to notable improvements in student completion, re-registration, performance, and satisfaction. The company’s adaptive learning approach provides students with more choices in how they interact with content, and challenges them at exactly the right level to help them learn more efficiently and effectively.

“We congratulate Gwinnett Technical College on the grant award and are excited to be working with this innovative group. Its well qualified team of instructors, technology resources, and institutional researchers make the college an ideal candidate to support this implementation effectively,” said Dr. John Boersma, CEO of Adapt Courseware and former university faculty member. “We are extremely impressed by GTC’s drive to make measurable impacts on learning outcomes and inspired by its goal to dramatically improve the learning experience for each and every student.”
