Office Mix now works with Moodle open source LMS

Embedding audio, video, or virtual simulations is easier with integration

integration-MoodleMicrosoft Open Technologies Inc. (MS Open Tech) recently announced a partnership with Remote-Learner to integrate Office 365 and the Moodle learning management system (LMS).

The LMS Moodle is now integrated with OneNote, OneDrive for Business, the Office 365 Outlook Calendar, and Office Mix.

Instructors can easily embed interactive online lessons created in PowerPoint with Office Mix. Lessons may contain audio, video, digital ink, interactive simulations or assessments.

Anoop Gupta, distinguished scientist for Office Mix. said, “We are thrilled with the opportunity to partner with Remote-Learner and integrate with the world-class Moodle learning management system.”

“Through our integration, Office Mix will provide a terrific, free experience for flipped classrooms and blended learning environments that educators can easily build using the familiarity of PowerPoint,” Gupta added.

All of this functionality and more is available from the Moodle plugin repository as two sets of integrated Moodle plugins:

Office 365 plugin—Provides single sign-on, OneDrive integration, Outlook Calendar integration and other features including Office Mix integration. The source code is available on GitHub.

Microsoft Services plugin—Provides integration with OneNote Consumer (for use by students), as well as Office Mix integration and other functionality is coming soon. The source code is available on GitHub.

On the blog, Microsoft Open Technologies President Jean Paoli wrote:

This week the project has entered a new phase with the launch of an initial beta program that includes several major educational institutions worldwide, and these pilot projects will provide hands-on feedback to help us refine the ways that Office 365 and Moodle can work seamlessly together, ranging from single sign-on to calendar integration, OneNote integration, and more. For a good overview of the planned features and some of the technical challenges and solutions involved, see Mike Churchward’s post today on the Remote-Learner blog. After this initial beta, we’ll be doing a more comprehensive beta starting in January and then v1.0 will be released soon thereafter.

This project is a great example of openness in action, taking advantage of Office 365’s open and well-documented REST APIs and Moodle’s open and well-documented plugin architecture.
