University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee partners with M3 Accounting on real-world training for hospitality students

Accounting and finance students simulate management of 100-room hotel

SARASOTA (September 13, 2012) – The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee is one of several universities across the U.S. that is partnering with M3 Accounting Services, using their hotel accounting software for hands-on hospitality management training.

Based on curriculum developed by USFSM’s College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership, hospitality students at University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Northern Arizona University, and University of Central Florida, will be using specialized M3 University hotel software.

This educational software is programmed with one month of data for a hypothetical 100-room hotel. Through the coursework, hospitality accounting and finance students will learn to analyze data and make management decisions based on simulated scenarios.

“With M3 University, students will virtually step into the role of hotel management,” said Dr. Cihan Cobanoglu, dean of USF Sarasota-Manatee College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership. “They will perform the tasks of the accounting department’s night auditor and paymaster, and use analytics to make operational and general management decisions. This invaluable tool will enforce the theoretical concepts covered in the classroom and offer students a real-world experience.”

Scott Watson, vice president of sales for M3 Accounting Services, says the software “brings textbook lessons to life – to really practice the skills needed in hospitality accounting and management. And this experience will give students an edge when they enter the work environment.”
