On October 23, 2007, the Board of Trustees at William Carey University (WCU), located in Hattiesburg, Miss., unanimously voted to construct the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine. The rationale was to open the College of Osteopathic Medicine to address the severe shortage of physicians in Mississippi and surrounding states and to impact the healthcare of rural Mississippians. In summer of 2010, the new facility opened and the College of Osteopathic Medicine enrolled an inaugural class of 110 students.
