Santa Clara University isn’t pushing into the online education market in a traditional academic subject like math, or even Silicon Valley’s signature computer science disciplines, the Silicon Valley Business Journal reports.

Instead, the university is wading into a crowded market with a course on “Business Ethics in the Real World.”

Santa Clara’s inaugural Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, was created by the school’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics as part of a new, three-pronged approach to education technology.

On top of the self-paced MOOC, which started last week and will be available through February, the center is also rolling out a mobile app and online discussion groups featuring high-profile local business leaders — a shift from traditional in-person events and publications.

The new online education push comes as competing schools like Stanford University vie for market share with a growing number of education technology startups and more established education companies.
