Asheville, N.C., high school senior Jacqueline DeJournett says the convenience of applying to college online allowed her to expand her list of prospective schools from only a handful to 13. She’s part of a burgeoning trend in the college application process, reports the Ashville Citizen-Times. Organizations like the College Foundation of North Carolina and Common Application, which offer generic online application forms, make it easy for students to answer a few basic questions then copy their answers to numerous universities. Western Carolina University has seen a surge in online applications. About 90 percent of its more than 12,000 applicants submitted information online for a freshman class of only 1,500 to 1,600 students. Admissions officials at UNC Asheville estimate 95 percent of the applications they’ve received this year have been submitted online. But as deadlines approach in the next month, admissions counselors warn students to take their time with cutting and pasting and remember to add personal touches to applications that may appear impersonal.
