A metaversity campus and metaversities are both synchronous and asynchronous--classes taught live can be recorded and saved in a content library

10 institutions launching metaversities this fall

A metaversity campus is both synchronous and asynchronous--classes taught live can be recorded and saved in a content library

Digital twin campuses will be teeming with students at 10 U.S. colleges and universities this fall.

In an effort spearheaded by VictoryXR, with financial support from Meta Immersive Learning, schools from across the United States will launch full courses on metaversity campuses designed as exact replicas of their physical campus.

A metaversity is a higher education institution recreated as a digital twin utilizing virtual reality in the metaverse (or at least the early iteration of what will ultimately become a full, global metaverse), according to VictoryXR.

“We know remote learning is exploding and we also know there’s a better way than the status quo,” said Steve Grubbs, VictoryXR CEO. “A metaversity campus is the solution that makes remote learning work for students and professors.”

Through Meta Immersive Learning, Meta is investing $150M to help develop the next generation of metaverse creators, fund high quality immersive experiences that transform the way we learn, and increase access to learning through technology.

VictoryXR is one recipient of the funding.

Each school will roll out a digital twin replica campus for students to attend classes on, whether they are on campus or learning remotely.

Each campus is built by VictoryXR on the EngageVR platform.

Each student will receive a Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset for use during the course they are taking.

Courses will be synchronous, or multi-student, as if they were attending class on a physical campus.

The List of Universities and Colleges include one existing metaversity and nine new metaversities:
Morehouse College
University of Kansas School of Nursing
New Mexico State University
South Dakota State University
Florida A&M University
West Virginia University
University of Maryland Global Campus
Southwestern Oregon Community College
California State University, Dominquez Hills
Alabama A&M University

“More than any learning innovation I have been involved with, Morehouse in the Metaverse has made the biggest difference for the students I teach,” said Dr. Muhsinah Morris, associate professor at Morehouse College.

Using either a virtual reality headset, or a PC, students will enter the metacampus with other students and their professor. There, they will engage in classroom experiences like delving into human anatomy, history field trips through a time machine or astronomy on a starship.

“Just like the real world, students will be able to break into small groups and work on projects together, no matter their physical distance,” said Grubbs, “but unlike the real world, they will be able to shrink to the size of Ant-man and tour the human body. It’s no wonder student retention is so much greater.”
