Colleges are increasingly hiring lower-paid part-time and limited-term contingent faculty, who in 2013 made up more than half of all instructors in higher education, finds an American Institutes for Research study for the TIAA Institute. This trend has led to cost savings in salaries and benefits for instructors, but hasn’t translated to the same level of savings when looking at the total compensation of all employees. Read more.
The U.S. Department of Education released the first debt-to-earnings rates for career training programs as required by the landmark Gainful Employment regulations. The release of these rates builds on the Department’s ongoing efforts to promote college completion and increase accountability in the postsecondary education marketplace by setting standards for career training programs, including programs offered by for-profit institutions, to ensure they are serving students well. A partnership between Cengage and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has saved students up to 50 percent on the cost of their course materials while increasing course engagement and retention. The RCCC e-Text Initiative, now in its third year, delivers Cengage materials to over 4,000 students in more than 30 courses. The college’s retention rate for the Developmental Reading and English III course increased nearly 18 percentage points, from 77.4 percent to 95.1 percent, between fall 2013 and fall 2015. Read more.

Now available are Sciences, History and Geography, which features historical monographs covering medicine, sciences, geography and more; as well as Literature, Grammar, Language, Catalogues and Periodicals, which features fiction, poetry, grammatical and linguistic works, catalogues, and periodicals.
