Notre Dame selects OneCampus to host insideND online community

The next-generation campus portal will connect Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff with institutional services, applications and information from any device

The University of Notre Dame has selected OneCampus from rSmart, an Internet2 NET+ offering [1], to modernize the way students, faculty, and staff access campus services, information and applications from any device. The cloud-based OneCampus will serve as the platform for insideND, the university’s online community, when it is retired later this year.

OneCampus provides colleges and universities a fresh, new approach to organizing their web-based services regardless if they are hosted on campus or in the cloud. Unlike traditional portals, the platform features a Google-like search, ratings/reviews to effectively analyze what services are being used and satisfaction levels, and dynamic categories such as “most popular” to promote service discovery.

Administrators can also convey important, time-sensitive information to a large audience through task-level announcements, alerts, and featured tasks.

From an IT perspective, OneCampus connects with an institution’s campus authentication system but sits on top of existing systems, directing users to disparate services through a centralized point, without affecting the underlying business units or processes. As a result, its implementation as well as ongoing updates are fast and easy, and the responsibility of maintenance can be shared by various stakeholders.

From the customer perspective, OneCampus provides a simple, easy-to-use tool that works on multiple devices. Faculty, staff and students can access a variety of services in one convenient place.

“Since selecting OneCampus, our team has been building out our site and actively soliciting feedback at ‘Look and See’ sessions with various user groups and departments. We have also identified ways to include students in the implementation process such as helping to collect information and create tasks to ensure a smooth transition between portals,” said John Hartman, Business Systems Analyst at Notre Dame.

rSmart CEO Tony Potts added, “As mobile use continues to rise on campus, many schools are searching for a cost-effective replacement or alternative to their legacy portal that will meet the dynamic and changing needs of their current and future students. We are thrilled to have Notre Dame join our growing community of forward-thinking institutions on this important path to progress.”

The OneCampus Internet2 NET+ service is the result of the collaboration between seven universities, Internet2, and rSmart to provide a unique offering to the higher education community. Technology leaders from Indiana University, University of Utah, University of Maryland, University of Pittsburgh, Clemson University, University of Nebraska-Omaha, and BYU-Idaho helped guide and shape the validated solution.
