St. Clair County Community College deploys strategic e-catalog solution designed to enhance student success, increase departmental efficiencies and put an end to the paper chase.

St. Clair County Community College (SC4) recently became Michigan’s 12th higher education institution to go live with an interactive e-catalog from Digital Architecture. Acalog powers the e-catalogs at more than 350 colleges and universities. In addition to providing SC4 students with the ability to quickly and easily search, save and share catalog information from their PC or mobile device, Acalog also provides a robust administrative platform to support distributed editing — enhancing transparency and accountability while creating significant time savings.

Acalog supports an SC4 initiative to transform the way the academic catalog is managed, edited and delivered to students and other stakeholders. A major goal was to find a way to improve the way changes are tracked for courses and programs while also providing an e-catalog with enough features and benefits to allow the school to transition away from print and PDF catalogs. In addition to increasing SC4’s departmental efficiencies, Acalog supports an institutional objective to enhance student success and engagement with an easier to use catalog search, a mobile friendly interface, the ability to create and store a personalized version of the catalog, and automatically generated degree planning guides.

For Debra Lacey, SC4 Academic Technologies Director, one of the biggest challenges associated with manually editing and publishing an academic catalog was that the information in the catalog was out of date the day it arrived on campus. She explained that administrators recognized a need to infuse technology into the management and delivery of both curriculum and the catalog: “Digital Architecture helped us realize our goals with Acalog, and they paved the way during our implementation by essentially doing all of the heavy lifting,” she said. “Our office was extremely impressed with Digital Architecture’s professionalism, their ability to meet every deadline, promise and deliverable. In the end the implementation of Acalog allows us to cut our departmental costs, enable us faster turn around time, and helps our students, faculty and advisors to see information faster and more accurately than ever before.”

Ken Blais, president of Digital Architecture, says his company’s product was designed from the ground up with higher education professionals specifically to meet the unique needs associated with managing and presenting academic catalog information. He says, “Acalog, unlike page-based content management systems, is catalog-content aware and records-based. As such, it can provide tremendous efficiency for tracking and managing curriculum changes during the edit process, ultimately making it easier in the e-catalog to find course and program information — and to share that information with advisors and friends.”

SC4 joins the University of Michigan-Flint, Montcalm Community College, Eastern Michigan University and eight other Michigan institutions with e-catalogs powered by Acalog.
