International student recruitment driving online strategies at two thirds of higher education institutions worldwide

TERMINALFOUR today announced results of global research which found that almost two thirds (65%) of those surveyed said that their institutions have a dedicated international website to attract students from outside their own country.

The results revealed a distinct divide between the UK and US when it came to focused international student recruitment with 58% of the UK respondents saying they have a dedicated international site in place as opposed to only 27% from the US.

Of those who have an international website, only 18% are using Google Translate to convert their content into multiple languages.

The research was completed online in July 2014 with the aim of exploring the evolving role of the web, social media and performance metrics in higher education. A total of 248 marketing, IT and senior management representatives from 169 higher education institutions around the world took part in the survey. The majority of the respondents came from the UK and the US with the remainder from Australia, Canada, Ireland and South Africa.

More than half (53%) of the universities and colleges have implemented dedicated international social media accounts while 35% have an active presence on geographical social media channels. Of those institutes who have created dedicated international social media channels, 60% are from the UK compared to only 25% from the US.

Mobile platforms are also playing an increasingly important role in international student recruitment and 43% of those surveyed have a responsive design in place that will adapt the layout of their website, depending on the device being used to view it. A further 40% of respondents are in the process of developing responsive design sites to better facilitate their vast audiences.

Commenting on the research, Piero Tintori, CEO, TERMINALFOUR said, “Colleges and universities are operating in fiercely competitive markets, as they seek to increase international student enrollment. From this research we can see that higher education institutions have begun to realize this, but UK institutions have been quicker than the US to corner the market.

“This could be as a result of new student visa reforms in the UK which is forcing these universities and colleges to implement student recruitment campaigns that differentiate them amongst the global student audience. In 2013, the number of international students enrolling in universities in England decreased for the first time in 29 years.*

“However, overall student enrollment also decreased in the US in 2013 as high school class numbers decreased.** As the number of students entering higher education declines, it will be increasingly important for institutions to step up online marketing to recruit students from outside their borders and prevent empty seats on courses.

“Markets such as Malaysia, Spain and Russia are increasing the number of international students entering their universities and creating even more competition. Having an international presence online isn’t simply about translating your website into multiple languages. You need to provide relevant immigration details, housing information and first hand interaction with current and past students in relation to life on campus and employment prospects. Demonstrating your institutes leading educational position, along with the supports offered to students will attract, not only the students themselves, but also their parents and potential employers.”

Piero Tintori, concluded, “International student recruitment is of vital importance to the growth and stability of the higher education market. Institutions need to invest time and resources into building an online brand that is recognized at a global level.”

TERMINALFOUR launches global research report: Digital strategies in higher education

TERMINALFOUR is today launching the results of its global higher education research into the role digital strategies are playing in modern higher education institutions. As universities and colleges compete on the global stage this research explores how they are using digital engagement to promote their brand to an international audience and to support recruitment, retention and funding goals.

The research was conducted online with 248 marketing, IT and senior management representatives from 169 higher education institutions around the world. The majority of the respondents came from the UK and the US with the remainder from Australia, Canada, Ireland and South Africa.

Some of the key findings include:

– Control of online strategy has moved from the IT team to a collaborative effort between web, marketing, alumni and recruitment
– Student recruitment is driving digital engagement strategies at nine out of ten higher education institutions while student retention is only impacting strategies at 34% of institutes
– Similarly, only 38% of respondents stated their institution concentrates on alumni engagement and fundraising activities when developing their web strategies
– Breaking this down by country, 32% of the US respondents and 13% of UK respondents are concentrating on alumni engagement
– 65% of respondents have a dedicated international website
– Measurement is a major priority, with 82% of respondents having real-time integration with analytics platforms to track the success of content and social media platforms
– 57% of respondents stated that prospective student leads generated online are not being measured by CRM systems
– When it comes to social media, 95% of respondents dedicate the majority of their efforts to Facebook, followed closely by Twitter (94%)
– Facebook’s influence is expected to decline and Twitter will become the most important social media channel in 12 months’ time for 84% of respondents
– 35% of respondents have an active presence on geographical social media channels.
– Vine, Snapchat and Pinterest have yet to make an impact with only 1.6% of institutions using these channels.

Piero Tintori, CEO, TERMINALFOUR commented, “We conducted this survey as universities and colleges are now competing in a much more globalized environment and need to deliver a clear and distinguishable brand to a wider audience. In order to survive in this market, online communications and effective strategies have become essential to help higher education institutes achieve their overall organizational goals.

“We were surprised by a number of the findings in this research, not least the low number of respondents who are using their web strategies to achieve student retention and alumni engagement objectives. Future state funding and alumni support is inextricably linked with student retention. All of today’s students and alumni operate in a virtual world and online communication offers an effective way to communicate with them on a personal level and foster the relationships that will lead to lasting connections.

“It is also interesting to note that US colleges appear to be much more interested in alumni relations than their UK counterparts at present. The US has a long history of fostering strong alumni relationships and with budget cuts and visa reforms taking place in the UK they need to start prioritizing these relationships in their online strategies.

“We hope these findings provide higher education institutions with an understanding of how online engagement has evolved to become an integral player in determining their success.”

Blackmagic Design announces Videohub Update 6.0

Major new software for Videohub routers, replaces old control and setup utilities with new modern and stylish designed software tools for both Mac OS X and Windows computers.

IBC 2014, Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 12, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced Videohub Software Update 6.0, a whole new software suite for the company’s popular Videohub range of SDI routers that provides new client control and setup applications for easier and simpler router operation. Blackmagic Videohub 6.0 is available now for download free of charge.

Videohub Update 6.0 software will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2014 booth in Hall 7, Stand H20.

The new Blackmagic Videohub 6.0 update includes 2 new software applications for both Mac OS X and Windows computers. The Blackmagic Videohub Control features a new user interface that includes elegantly designed buttons that allow users to customize and control their Videohub routing from their desktop. Blackmagic Videohub Control is perfect when customers are working on editing, color correction or other computer based workstations and want to change routing in their facility.

Blackmagic Videohub is simple and easy to use and supports the latest technologies such as high resolution “Retina” displays that use paper resolution screen displays. Blackmagic Videohub Control can be installed on multiple computers in a post production facility or broadcaster so all users can quickly launch the software and change route cross points with the press of a button.

For configuring and installing Blackmagic Videohub routers, the administration software, Blackmagic Videohub Setup, has been designed to make it extremely fast to install and label router inputs and outputs and to change other settings on Videohub routers. It automatically finds all Videohub routers on the users network, or any routers connected locally via USB and then lets the administrator or broadcast engineer simply select the router and change its settings.

Blackmagic Videohub Setup also allows customers to save and load router configurations so they can backup the router in case they need to quickly load the router settings in the future, or even change router configurations between jobs, common on smaller routers in live production environments.

Blackmagic Videohub Setup also supports both Mac OS X and Windows computers and supports high resolution Retina displays.

About Blackmagic Videohub Routers

The Blackmagic Smart Videohub family of professional SDI video routers are the world’s first Ultra HD mixed format routers to include built in LCD video monitoring and spin knob router control. The Smart Videohub routers include 6G-SDI technology so customers can simultaneously connect and route any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD video all on the same router at the same time. Even if a customer has multiple different television formats connected to the router inputs, Smart Videohub routers will route any of them to any combination of the outputs, all simultaneously.

Smart Videohub routers includes an elegant machined metal front panel and the revolutionary Visual Routing combines the spin knob and button entry with easy to read custom router labels over live video from the inputs onto the LCD. When any input or output is selected, the video is displayed live on the LCD. This allows customers to see their router connections as video on the LCD as they scroll the knob to select routing.

“This new software allows all Blackmagic Videohub customers to get a totally new router experience because we have completely replaced the old software with a fresh new design that looks state of the art and is just so nice to use,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Our original router software was developed back when we had small routers and really did not make setup of our larger 288 routers easy. With this new router software, we get the ability to handle large routers, but the software is just so much nicer to use with an elegant UI and much better features. We think Videohub customers will be very happy with this update as the improvement in the software is dramatic.”

“In developing the new DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G we set out to design a card that just had everything we needed for high end feature film work in DaVinci Resolve, and we said to the engineers, don’t worry about cost, just make it as awesome as you can!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “This new DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G is the result and it’s got everything we could want! But at the same time it’s also compatible with analog equipment from decades ago, all in the single card! Plus it’s still an affordable US$1,495, which is exciting!”
