The University of Findlay Uses Aruba Networks Unified Wired and Wireless Infrastructure to Expand Access and Enable BYOD

Aruba ClearPass Enables Secure On-boarding of Mobile Devices, Allows Faculty to Integrate Technology into Classrooms for Enriched Curriculum

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Nov. 25, 2013 – Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), a leading provider of next-generation network access solutions for the mobile enterprise, today announced that The University of Findlay (UF) , one of the top private universities in Ohio, has deployed a unified wired and wireless access network based on Aruba’s Mobile Virtual Enterprise (MOVE) architecture. The new infrastructure delivers secure, campus-wide wireless access and allows the University to accommodate Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for students, faculty, staff and guests. The network is also enabling 100 percent of the University’s faculty to integrate technology into their classrooms and incorporate real-time, multimedia instructional materials into their lessons, improving the students’ educational experiences.

UF is experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of personal, mobile and wireless devices its students and staff are bringing onto campus, and the University’s faculty members are anxious to use wireless to leverage these devices in the classroom. UF needed a network infrastructure capable of supporting the resulting high density of these devices in classrooms, lecture halls and common areas, while maintaining high performance and rigorous security.

“Wireless is the connectivity of choice on campus,” said Tim Stuart, Manager of Network Operations for The University of Findlay. “It’s used exclusively in our classrooms, and 97 percent of our students are connecting wirelessly in our dorms. With our students bringing an average of three to four wireless devices each on campus for communication, entertainment and academic purposes, it was important that the network could support their needs. In addition, we wanted to ensure that our faculty could use the network and these mobile devices to enhance student learning in and out of the classroom.”

After a rigorous evaluation process, UF chose Aruba to deliver the new unified access network. UF is using a combination of Aruba Mobility Access Switches, Access Points and Mobility Controllers, as well as the AirWave Network Management System and the ClearPass Access Management System.

The University’s students and faculty are relying on the new Aruba infrastructure to access the University’s Blackboard learning management system and to collaborate from dorm rooms and other on-campus and off-campus locations. In the classroom, instructors are using the new network to improve student learning experiences. For example, business students can witness real-time trading on the New York Stock Exchange, students in the arts programs can view exhibits or performances from anywhere in the world, and in the University’s health professions programs, students can now read in-depth case studies from their mobile devices.

The flexibility and security delivered by Aruba’s ClearPass Access Management solution were key factors in The University of Findlay’s decision to choose Aruba. ClearPass lets the University securely onboard mobile devices onto the network, enabling a true BYOD environment. By centralizing access policies across the entire network, ClearPass ensures that each user has the right access privileges based on who they are and what device they’re using.

“ClearPass is critical for validating devices and users so that we can ensure secure access across campus for all of our students, faculty, staff and guests,” commented Stuart. “It is a huge part of our security strategy today, and it offers the flexibility we’ll need as we grow and expand our network.”

Looking ahead, UF is evaluating Aruba’s 802.11ac technology to accommodate the expected growth of the network, and Aruba’s AirGroup capability to support Apple AirPlay and AirPrint capabilities as the number of Apple devices on the network continues to increase.
