EDUCAUSE’s 2013 conference kicks off Tuesday, and eCampus News will be in Anaheim, Cal., bringing you the latest news, developments, and innovations from the annual instructional technology gathering.
This year’s EDUCAUSE conference will feature hundreds of presentations, speakers, and exhibits touching on 18 themes, from crowd sourcing to cloud sourcing, and from communication to consumerization to a discussion of online courses.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, several sessions this week will focus on massive open online courses (MOOCs). To MOOC or Not to MOOC is one of at least nine sessions about the much-hyped type of online learning.
It will feature a panel of educators and experts discussing the online courses and why some instructors have embraced them.
The EDUCAUSE panel will feature Katie Blot and Jarl Jonas of Blackboard, Inc.; John Fritz of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Phillip Miller of Moodlerooms, Inc.; Michael Scheuermann of Drexel University; Adam S. Wandt of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice; and Susan M. Zvacek of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technologies.
Other sessions of the 2013 conference will focus more broadly on open culture and its ramifications for higher education.
John Donaldson, an instructional designer at Oregon State University, will review the design and implementation of a course where students wrote and published books that were licensed by Creative Commons, a type of public copyright license that allows people to freely share, use, and add to an existing work.
The conference will also feature presentations on Big Data, campus sustainability, eTextbooks, flipped learning, mobile devices, and more. A handful of sessions can be viewed online as public webcasts, including presentations on internet governance, copyright challenges, and gamification.
