Literally drumming forward the field of auditory brain stimulation, the interactive streaming radio’s continuous performance test (CPT) compares sustained focus with and without music.

Music is often used in prescriptive ways. But there is much speculation on whether music, or more specifically, certain types of music can enhance cognitive function. Brain Shift Radio’s CPT study examines musical rhythm’s ability to have a physiological impact on the brain. Using the architecture of the BSR algorithms and the CPTs, the Strong Institute is compiling a quantity of data never before acquired. This level of data will provide an unprecedented look into how certain types of music affect the ability to improve and maintain a focused state.

Performing like a game, the CPT allows users to test their focus and track their results. The CPT assesses focusing abilities by using raw and weighted scores to provide aggregated results.

BSR’s attention tests were built using standardized, quantitative testing methods on an expanding platform which will allow the collection and analysis of limitless user data. This data will not only determine whether music can improve focused attention, but will also identify which techniques offer the most significant results for various population groups.

The core rhythmic technique used in Brain Shift Radio was developed from the Strong Institute’s research on auditory brain stimulation and cognitive function. Called Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI), the Institute’s work began with children and adults on the Autism and ADHD spectrums. Reducing anxiety and improving focus were key steps to making gains in symptomatic improvement for these populations. For nearly two decades, REI has been successfully used for long-term improvement in stress reduction and increased focus.

“Based on our research over the last twenty years, we know that music stimulates the brain.”, says Brain Shift Radio Creative Director, Jeff Strong. “The real question is how do you optimize the music to improve focused attention. At Brain Shift Radio we have been actively exploring this using custom music selection algorithms. With our new attention tests we can now see how the choices work and can further customize the music to each person’s focusing needs.”

Recent third-party studies examine the core techniques used for BSR music to increase focused attention. A study that compared BSR music to Ritalin showed that BSR music had twice impact of 20 mg of Ritalin for improving focus. A placebo-controlled double blind study of 100 elementary students showed a significant improvement in sustained focus with the BSR music. “The children of the Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention group in general took more time, made fewer mistakes and failures which resulted in an improvement in the number of correct responses.” said Wim Oostra, lead researcher.
