Banner by Ellucian Achieves Oracle Exadata Optimized Status

Banner by Ellucian Optimized for Speed and Reliability on Oracle Exadata Database Machine

FAIRFAX, Va. – April 8, 2013 – Ellucian today announced it has achieved Oracle Exadata Optimized status through Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), demonstrating that Banner by Ellucian has been tested and tuned with Oracle Exadata Database Machine to deliver speed, scalability, and reliability to customers. Ellucian is a Gold level member in Oracle PartnerNetwork.

“Banner by Ellucian running on the Oracle Exadata Database Machine performed exceptionally well in recent tests, enabling us to reach up to 19 times more registrations per hour and 5 times faster processing of higher education’s toughest load: peak concurrent student registration,” said Brian Knotts, senior vice president, chief architect, Ellucian.

The solutions have increased performance tenfold over legacy systems at the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in Abu Dhabi which supports more than 20,000 students and 2,000 staff members on 17 campuses. Before the implementation, executing end-of-semester processes consumed 100 percent of CPU and took two to three days for completion. Now the processes can be completed within a few hours, and total resource utilization has not gone above 15 percent. Also, HCT consolidated its six databases into one and expects to gain cost savings in the long term.

“In addition to improving the performance of our enterprise applications, the extra capacity lets us implement important new applications like flexible registration and others that support students, faculty, and staff,” said Khalid Tariq, head of enterprise systems, Higher Colleges of Technology. “Our enrollment is growing and our users want things to be done in the quickest manner possible. Now we have the resources to better support them.”

“Institutions have varied processing loads, yet their administrative system needs to be tuned to meet the highest demand periods without any impact on performance of their enterprise applications,” added Toby Williams, senior vice president, corporate development, Ellucian. “Also, larger institutions are continually experiencing increases in users as well as demand for more applications and more resources. We worked to configure Banner so that functional tasks are processed very fast and in a shorter window of time, even during peak usage periods at large institutions.”

Oracle Exadata Optimized is part of the Oracle Exastack Optimized program which allows partners, such as Ellucian, to leverage OPN enablement resources and dedicated lab environments to help develop, test and tune their applications on Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle SPARC SuperCluster engineered systems. The Oracle Exadata Database Machine delivers extreme performance and is the ideal database platform for OLTP applications, data warehouses as well as the varied and unpredictable workloads of cloud computing. It is a complete package of servers, storage, networking, and software that is massively scalable, secure and redundant.

By achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status, Oracle recognizes Ellucian for developing, testing and tuning Banner by Ellucian on Oracle Exadata. Customers can be confident when selecting Banner by Ellucian that it has been tested and tuned to achieve performance, scalability, and reliability.

The following results were achieved during testing of administrative tasks on Banner by Ellucian running on the Oracle Exadata:
• Up to 19 times more registrations were processed in the same timeframe compared to the benchmark system, with an average of over 11 times performance improvement
• Up to 5 times faster processing for peak loads of concurrent student registrations as compared to the benchmark system
• Significant resources remained available during peak registration loads

Ellucian customers can experience the rapid processing time of the Oracle Exadata at Ellucian Live, Ellucian’s user conference. The machines will power the Ellucian Live network that includes over 800 sessions and hands-on presentations; 150 email stations, Learning Lab, Action Line, and much more. At Ellucian Live, approximately 8,500 participants from higher education institutions around the world come together for a common purpose: to embrace new ideas, develop new insights, and design new approaches to help education move forward.
