Internet2 Deploys SIP Cloud Voice Services – Tulane, Texas A&M, UMBC, and Other Member Universities Nationwide Will Benefit from Specialized Service with Reduced Cost and Administration

Emeryville, CA – February 11, 2013 – Internet2, a member-owned advanced technology community founded by the nation’s leading higher education institutions, has completed deployment of its SIP cloud voice services at its new office in Emeryville, California. The SIP Services are offered to members under the Internet2 NET+ portfolio and are comprised of a Hosted PBX Solution from Aastra, and SIP Trunking Services from Level 3 Communications, delivered across the Internet2 network.

“This service comes at an opportune time for Tulane as our PBX systems are nearing end of life,” said Charlie McMahon, vice president of information technology and chief technology officer, Tulane University. “It also fits right in line with our rapid adoption of cloud services in many areas. The challenges we face at Tulane are not unique, and I am convinced other institutions can derive similar benefits from adoption. Leveraging the benefits of the Internet2 SIP Service alone can save millions of dollars for the higher education community.”

Tulane is the institutional sponsor for the SIP Services program in its Research Incubator stage, and McMahon served on the CIO steering committee during the Service Validation stage. The early adopter campuses include Texas A&M University, Tulane University, and University of Maryland, Baltimore County with general availability to all eligible campuses this spring 2013. Internet2 offices in Washington, D.C. and Ann Arbor, Michigan will soon have the SIP Services installed as well.

“The growing interest in the SIP Services is good validation that by leveraging member needs and demand, synergies of both customization and efficiency will be another factor in driving innovation within research and education,” stated Shel Waggener, senior vice president, Internet2. “We welcome the addition of new early adopters who can immediately benefit from the service and look forward to more of our member institutions capitalizing on this tremendous opportunity.”
