Soomo Publishing Receives Regional Emmy for Instructional Content

“Bad Romance” Parody Video Claims Emmy for Higher Education Publisher

February 5, 2013 – Asheville, NC – Soomo Publishing, a leading creator of digital resources for college courses, received the Emmy for Informational or Instructional Program at the 27th Annual MidSouth Emmy Awards. Soomo brought home the award for its music video “Bad Romance: Women’s Suffrage.” The educational video parodies Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” while paying homage to Alice Paul and the generations of women who fought to give women the right to vote.

Soomo’s filmmaker Tim Alden Grant received the honor on behalf of the company as the co-producer, editor, and director of the video. Grant said, “I was fortunate to be surrounded by a cast and crew that cared deeply about this project, and on their behalf I’m honored to receive this award. I truly believe in this kind of educational video—with a fun, engaging, culturally relevant perspective on people and events that changed the course of history.” Emilia Fuentes Grant, the video’s writer, was also nominated for a regional Emmy.

Among its achievements, “Bad Romance: Women’s Suffrage” has received 1.1 million views on YouTube; been promoted by the National Women’s History Museum, the League of Women Voters, the Alice Paul Institute, and the Suffrage Centennial Celebration; and been incorporated into museum displays at the Susan B. Anthony House and the “Women Who Rock” exhibit at the Durham Museum.

Commenting on the award, Soomo CEO and Founder David Lindrum said, “What started as a fun way to teach women’s suffrage has become one of the best things we’ve created yet. I’m thrilled to see our film team receive this recognition. Imagine that—an Emmy for textbook content.”

Created for Soomo’s American Government webtext, “Bad Romance: Women’s Suffrage” is currently featured in assignments that are part of two Soomo Publishing titles: Central Ideas in American Government and A History of The United States, 1865 – Present.
