University of Minnesota Reduces Data Center Footprint while Enhancing Performance and Manageability with Oracle Exadata Database Machine

Leading Research Institution Consolidates More Than 200 Databases to Approximately 20 while Maximizing Availability for Thousands of Users

EDUCAUSE, Denver, CO – November 6, 2012

News Facts
• University of Minnesota, a top research institution comprised of five campuses, 65,000 students and 25,000 employees, has realized systematic changes and improved database administration efficiency with Oracle Exadata Database Machine.
• The institution uses Oracle’s PeopleSoft Human Resources, PeopleSoft Financial Management and PeopleSoft Campus Solutions to run many of its critical business applications. To support these applications, the University of Minnesota uses Oracle Database, Oracle Diagnostics Pack, Oracle Tuning Pack, Oracle Advanced Security and Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition.
• By hosting its IT environment on two Oracle Exadata Database Machine half racks, the University of Minnesota consolidated more than 200 Oracle database instances into fewer than 20, enabling it to reduce data center floor space and total cost of ownership.
• In addition, the University of Minnesota now delivers Oracle database hosting services to departments and business units across the institution, including its research departments.
• Hosted under a single architecture, Oracle Exadata permits the university to deliver database-wide updates under a consistent set of standards, greatly improving manageability. For instance, the university deployed a new database security role for the performance team to all databases in approximately five minutes – a process that would have previously taken weeks.
• Oracle Exadata enables the institution’s database administrators to support thousands of queries per second – with up to 90 times faster processing speed1 – while improving disaster recovery capabilities to ensure maximum database availability for thousands of users.
• University of Minnesota worked with Oracle Consulting to implement Oracle Exadata in approximately three weeks – on time and on budget – in May 2011. The environment went production live with the university’s PeopleSoft applications in March 2012.

Supporting Quotes
• “The Exadata platform has been an enabler for us to reduce our total cost of ownership related to supporting Oracle databases. This is because we were able to drive the adoption of best practices and dramatically reduce the amount of infrastructure required,” said Patton Fast, senior director and enterprise architecture, University of Minnesota.
