Taking a leadership role in innovative professional development, the Virginia Department of Education was the first to adopt the service for ongoing teacher education.
Beginning July 1, Virginia divisions and teachers have access to the state-provided Understand Scoring service, which provides self-directed teacher training in constructed response scoring.

Delivered through the proven Perspective platform, educators use Understand Scoring to learn about the scoring process, review scored exemplar items and practice scoring authentic items on their own. Easy-to-understand reports enable teachers to compare their scoring with that of professionally scored items. This allows teachers to become more familiar with the constructed response scoring process, the elements that constitute high performing student responses and aids teachers in helping to develop confident writers.
