Richmond, VA, and Iowa City, IA (PRWEB) July 29, 2009 — Answering the call for technology-driven solutions that improve teaching quality and effectiveness, education service and solution company Pearson today announced the introduction of Understand Scoring, a new professional development service of Perspective™, the company’s innovative online remediation and enrichment tool.
Taking a leadership role in innovative professional development, the Virginia Department of Education was the first to adopt the service for ongoing teacher education.
Beginning July 1, Virginia divisions and teachers have access to the state-provided Understand Scoring service, which provides self-directed teacher training in constructed response scoring.
"Online professional development tools like Understand Scoring have been very successful for us," said Tracy Robertson, English Specialist, Virginia Department of Education. "We are excited to have Understand Scoring in place this summer because digital services and solutions offer our teachers professional development opportunities that fit their schedules and reduce the need for onsite workshops," she added.
Delivered through the proven Perspective platform, educators use Understand Scoring to learn about the scoring process, review scored exemplar items and practice scoring authentic items on their own. Easy-to-understand reports enable teachers to compare their scoring with that of professionally scored items. This allows teachers to become more familiar with the constructed response scoring process, the elements that constitute high performing student responses and aids teachers in helping to develop confident writers.
"With the increased focus on assessment and teacher accountability, states, divisions and teachers need convenient, easy-to-use professional development resources. We are proud to work with the Virginia Department of Education to address these needs with affordable solutions like Perspective’s Understand Scoring service," said Douglas Kubach, President and Chief Executive Officer, Assessment and Information group of Pearson.
In Virginia, the Understand Scoring service uses authentic student items and is configured to the commonwealth’s three domain scoring model where students are assigned scores on composing, written expression and usage/mechanics. Perspective’s Understand Scoring service can be customized to meet any state or large district’s need for continued teacher training in constructed response scoring.
