Rachel Harris wants to become a pediatric endocrinologist, but she might want to consider a career in finance if her college payment plan succeeds, reports the Chicago Tribune. Eager to attend the University of Notre Dame, the 17-year-old from Muskegon Township, Mich., launched a web site, http://iwanttogotonotredame.com, that asks for donations to help her pay the $46,000 tuition, room, and board. As of March 19 she had received about 400 eMails, and her site had been visited about 37,000 times, said her father, Lee Harris. About 85 percent of the responses have been positive, coming from people as far away as Peru, China, and Ethiopia, Rachel wrote in an eMail. So far, she said, she has received nearly $1,000. Harris, already accepted by the University of Michigan, expects to learn whether she has been admitted to Notre Dame by early April. She said she’ll return whatever she collects if she doesn’t make the cut. The high school senior carries a 3.97 grade-point average and has applied for scholarships.
