Campus touts STEM careers to attract students

Hampton University aims to make STEM learning fun, link majors to careers to boost student participation.

STEM-hamptonThe low number of minority and female students in STEM fields such as science and technology is a national issue, and Hampton University (HU) faculty members have taken it on.

Several recent grants will help HU with extra programs, but Dean of the School of Science Calvin Lowe said they are part of a larger picture. The key is making the fields of STEM fun, and familiarizing students with the career possibilities.

“What you try to do really is to give students a real idea of what STEM is all about, and how it’s used, where it’s used and really kind of do it by example,” Lowe said.
