Live streaming service to connect University of Delaware students, parents, and alumni to campus events

Live streaming service places multiple servers in strategic locations around campus to cover and stream multiple events in a single day.

The Media Services department at the University of Delaware was looking for a live streaming solution to help raise the profile of the school and keep students, parents, donors and alumni connected to the school activities, sports, and special events.

University of Delaware hosts many world renowned speakers on campus for lectures, live talks, debates, and special events. Previous speakers include Sonia Sotomayor, DeRay Mckesson, Michael Chertoff, Maya Angelou, Bill Cohwer, Daryl Strawberry, Cornell West, John Quinones, Wynton Marsalis and Anderson Cooper.

The university wanted to drive individuals that couldn’t be on campus to the website to experience all of the excitement. The Media Services team had to find a system that could go anywhere, featured broadcast quality and had minimal latency. The LiveU system proved to be the answer.

“We have embraced LiveU technology because it delivers immediacy and efficiency. By placing multiple servers in strategic locations around campus, we can cover and stream multiple events in a single day quickly without having to move and re-set a wired or RF based wireless systems,” said Carl Asti, Director/IT-Media Services, University of Delaware.

In addition to University of Delaware’s video production unit, Asti’s team manages two performance venues and provides technical support in as many as nine venues on campus. Production tech support incudes all aspects lighting, sound and video (I-Mag, streaming, and content creation).

“We support outdoor events on campus and utilize the LiveU system to live stream many of them,” added Asti. “The team also uses LiveU to stream or wirelessly record a special event or lecture in one of the 180 classrooms.”

LiveU enabled University of Delaware to go mobile anywhere – inside and outside campus – and even across the state. “That was a big selling point,” noted Asti.

The school continues to look for interesting ways to bring university life to its alums, donors, benefactors, current students, and parents that can’t be there. Currently the Media Services team is hosting the live streams on the website www.udel.edu/udlive anywhere from three to 15 times per month depending on the schedule.
